Probe after school bus runs over teenage learner in Kamesh

Kamesh – The South African Police Service in Kamesh, Uitenhage, is investigating a case of culpable homicide following a fatal bus accident in which a 16-year-old teenager was killed on Thursday.

"It is alleged that on Thursday, at about 14:10, the driver of the bus was transporting a group of school children to their residence and dropped the 16-year-old girl in Ritz Street, Tamboville," described police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart.

"It is further alleged that after the scholar got off the bus and as the driver pulled away.

"He suddenly felt that he was driving over something. He immediately stopped, got out off the bus and found the girl lying under the left front wheel of the bus."

Capt Swart said that Emergency Services were immediately summoned to the scene.

"The teenager was declared dead on the scene. The other children that were in the bus, were taken to a local hospital for medical treatment."

The name of the victim will be released after a formal identification is completed.

Police investigations are continuing.
