Probe underway after Bluewater Bay bridge accident claims three

Port Elizabeth - Investigations are underway after three people died when a bakkie drove off the N2 bridge and plunged into the Swartkops River mouth in Bluewater Bay, Port Elizabeth, on Monday. Two other occupants from the same bakkie were rushed to hospital with injuries.

The accident held up traffic on the busy N2 Highway as Emergency Services and members of the public joined hands in saving people from the water.

According to police information, the bakkie - a silver Toyota double cab bakkie, and a maroon Chrysler Neon, apparently collided on the bridge.

Both vehicles were travelling towards the Nelson Mandela Bay at about 11:45 on Monday morning when the accident took place.

It is also suspected that strong winds experienced on Monday might have played a part in the accident.

Meanwhile, a case of culpable homicide is under investigation by Port Elizabeth police.

Police will release the names of those killed in the accident when their next of kin have been notified.
