Proteas climb to number one ODI ranking, player stats vs Sri Lanka ODI Series

Following another thumping 88-run victory over Sri Lanka at SuperSport Park, Centurion, on Saturday, the Proteas have now achieved two 5-0 whitewashes in a single summer – first over Australia in October last year, and now over their central Asian rivals.

Following the sweeping whitewash, South Africa are now ranked number one in the World ICC ODI Team Rankings, leapfrogging Australia, who drop to second. To back that up, South Africa is represented by four players in the Top 10 ICC ODI Batsmen rankings, namely: AB de Villiers (2nd), Faf du Plessis (4th), Quinton de Kock (5th) and Hashim Amla (6th).

Imran Tahir occupies first place rating in the Top 10 ICC ODI Bowler rankings, while Kagiso Rabada ties at seventh with New Zealand’s Matt Henry.

In Saturday’s conclusive ODI against Sri Lanka, the batsmen once again deservedly heap more praise after projecting a monstrous total of 384/6. The opening partnership between Amla and de Kock, enveloped an astonishing 187-run partnership, achieved sublime triple figured scores of 154 and 109 respectively.

That partnership alone set the tone for the rest of the match to follow and the series as a whole, as du Plessis (41) and Farhaan Behardien (32) polished off the innings to achieve the supposed unbeatable total.

Sri Lanka were however, courageous in their chase, after being at one stage 199-8, before Asela Gunaratne kept strike at the crease in two stern consecutive partnerships with Sachith Pathirana (93-run partnership) and Suranda Lakmal (an unbeaten 97-run partnership) respectively.

Obtaining that footprint in the Sri Lankan batting innings, Gunaratne scored an unbeaten 114, with Pathirana scoring 56 and Lakmal 20 not out respectively. Opener, Niroshan Dickwella, batted well in the initial stages – scoring 39.

With the ball, Chris Morris contributed most significantly for the Proteas – achieving bowling figures of 4/31.
