Proteas’ player stats in New Zealand ODI Series, winning it 3-2

Heading into the three-match Test Series on early Wednesday morning (SA time) in their tour to New Zealand, the Proteas have yet again amassed some much-needed confidence for ODI’s ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy beginning on the 1st of June later this year.

In their fluctuation of results, South Africa beat New Zealand 3-2 in the ODI Series after the Proteas clinched a convincing six-wicket victory last Saturday at Eden Park in Auckland, which also secured a sixth consecutive ODI Series win, after last losing a Series 2-1 to Bangladesh in July 2015.

Since choking in the 2015 Cricket World Cup in the semi-finals to the currently-opposed New Zealand, South Africa has played a total 37 complete ODI’s and have won an astounding 25 of those.

Before the ICC Champions Trophy commences in June, South Africa will play three warm-up ODI’s against England on away soil in May, but the men in green and gold can hold their heads up high for their prospects for achieving their very first silverware – one small step towards the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

On Saturday, a fine knock from the front between Faf du Plessis and David Miller, resulted in the two achieving an unbeaten 62-run partnership with du Plessis scoring 51 not out and Miller 45 not out.

On a relatively slow wicket, du Plessis showed fine composure, setting the tone of the conditions, for Miller to then come in and smash six fours and two sixes with his strike-rate of 128.57.

South Africa then won comfortably with 106 balls to spare in their retraction, as Chris Morris (5/40) and Dwaine Pretorius (4/30) starred with the ball in the first innings. Kagiso Rabada and Andile Phehlukwayo also bowled well – taking 3/32 and 3/27 figures respectively.

Currently the two sides are underway with their first Test encounter, with South Africa setting out to bat first and scoring 229/4 at the end of day one. This after the Proteas were in early trouble when they were 22/3 at the end of the 19th over.

Dean Elgar then broke through and amassed 128 not out at the close-of-play, partnered with Temba Bavuma (38 not out). Du Plessis also kept the momentum spiralling, with his score of 52 before being caught.
