Provincial French flavour: Dessie's Fine Food & Wines serves fine food in a delightful setting

I love Saturday mornings. The weekday stress and excitement has worn off and the rest of the weekend is pleasantly anticipated. It is a time that I spend with my family and going out for breakfast is always a treat. One of my favourite spots to enjoy a relaxed meal is at Dessie's Fine Food & Wines, located in the Bloomingdales Centre on Main Road, Walmer.

Dessie herself is a Cordon Bleu chef and her restaurant has a clear French influence - white linen serviettes, polished cutlery and loads of cakes and patisseries on display. The décor, with its eclectic mix of old and new tables and a scatter of cushions on the chairs, is very like a Provençal French eatery.

On a recent visit, my youngest daughter and I decided to sit on the sun-dappled veranda. It was a beautiful summer morning and the flowers in the nursery below us were in full bloom. After ordering fruit juices and tea, my daughter happily skipped off to look at the fish pond, explore the gardens and, of course, make use of the play area located at the bottom of the garden.

The restaurant was buzzing that day as their well-trained staff moved between the tables, took orders and cleared tables - despite the load shedding. Dessie’s had a backup generator so it was always business as usual.

I found that Dessie’s also has, arguably, one of the best breakfast, lunch and brunch menus in Port Elizabeth. The wine list includes both South African and Italian wines. ‘Scrambeled eggs with Franschhoek smoked trout’; ‘Brasaula salad with pickled aubergine, avocado and toasted pumpkin seed’; ‘Hand crafted chicken and thyme pie’ are some of the meals to look forward to - one’s mouth waters just from reading the menu.

On that particular visit, I decided on their Frittata with feta and sun-dried tomatoes with homemade brown bread toast while my daughter tried their fresh scones with jam and cream. Our orders taken, I sat back and happily read the news and sipped my tea while my daughter explored the flower garden, the pond and made new friends at the swings.

Moments later our orders arrived. My frittata was delicious – fluffy and filling all at the same time. I found my daughter’s scones just as my grandmother had made them – what a treat! I will be visiting soon and want to try their Wicked Welsh Rarebit. Hope to see you there!
