Provincial One-Day Challenge: EP, SWD get shown up

After drawing their Sunfoil 3-Day Cup match against Kwazulu-Natal, Eastern Province slumped by just 19 runs in the cross-pool One-Day Challenge encounter against the same Durban-based side at the Chatsworth Stadium in Durban on Sunday.

On what appeared to be a relatively slow and seamer’s wicket, each side could not manage to score more than 200 in each of their 50-over innings’, with KZN batting first and only scoring 189/9 in their spell.

The side from Durban looked to be in trouble when they lost their first three wickets in the first five overs and were 26/3, before the 44-run partnership between Sibonelo Makhanya and Bruce Kerr lasted until the 18th over. After that stern partnership broke with Kerr going out on 13, Makhanya maintained the crease strike until being bowled out by EP’s Solo Nqweni for 46.

Jason Oakes then scored an unbeaten 67 for KZN, which gave the home side some much-needed headway as the innings concluded. With the ball, Anrich Nortje took 3/40 bowling figures, with Junaid Dawood and Ngazibini Sigwili each taking two wickets apiece with 2/24 and 2/27 figures for EP respectively.

Following an abrupt late collapse with the loss of five wickets in their last seven overs, EP had to succumb to a total of 170 all out in 46.1 overs. Struggling to adapt on a swinging wicket, EP were well-beaten in nine of their 10 wicket-losses through snick-behinds, LBW’s and bowled-deliveries – which indicates the significance of home-ground advantage in self-knowledgeable pitch conditions.

EP had some middle-order promise with Mathew Christensen scoring 44 and Tian Koekemoer scoring 41, but didn’t prove enough to pave way for their target. For KZN’s bowling, Okuhle Cele (3/26) and Rabian Engelbrecht (3/32) were the best contributors.

On the other end of the border, South Western Districts lost to Northerns in both the Sunfoil 3-Day Cup and One-Day Challenge matches by nine wickets and 81 runs respectively.

The cross-pool One-Day Challenge encounter was played at the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn on Sunday and SWD failed to reach their 233 total-chase after Northerns posted 232/9 in their 50 overs. Grant Thompson scored 73 and Lerato Kgoatle 40, with SWD’s Glenton Stuurman showing exceptional individual prowess in his innings bowling figures of 5/33.

SWD’s meek total chase came to an end at 151 all out, with Niel Hornbuckle and Jongile Kilani being the only two batting contributors scoring more than 15 runs with scores of 37 and 38 respectively. A second 5-wicket haul on the day, saw Northerns’ Thomas Kaber achieving 5/35 bowling figures.

EP will play their next One-Day Challenge encounter against Namibia in a Pool B fixture in Windhoek on 22nd of January with SWD playing their next game in a Pool A match-up against Northern Cape also in Oudtshoorn on February the 12th.
