Queens College edge Dale College in thriller, all EC schools 1st XV results last weekend

Dale College took on Queens College in the pick of the Eastern Cape schools rugby encounters over the weekend – with the traditional rivalry outing all odds on the field’s play, as both sides played with their utmost pride at stake in Queenstown.

Heading into the game, Dale were firmly favourited to win after producing better performances at the Kearsney College Easter Rugby Festival the week before; winning one of their three encounters with the other two being edging losses, while Queens losing all three quite convincingly.

Despite this, Queens were tactical in their approach to the game and did the ground work needed to close Dale off with the use of tight, forward play, forcing Dale to succumb and alternatively attack from the depths of their own half.

The score-line exchange, however, never expanded to more than a seven-point gap between both sides, as with any given chance, either team could have won it from any presiding stint of excellence.

This sort for a thrilling spectacle for the much-anticipating spectators, and just when Dale received a free-kick penalty in the dying moments of the game when they lead 24-22; they tried to play it in their forwards to close the game off.

This resultantly backfired when excellent pilfering from Queens in the tight-play resulted in them winning a penalty, 42-metres out – which they astonishingly converted to win the game 25-24.

With a lot of other schools resting after their respective Easter rugby festivals the week before, some notable EC schools did not take to the field over the weekend, but a prominent Nelson Mandela Bay rivalry saw Framesby beat Daniel Pienaar 26-19 in Uitenhage.

The weekly winter schools’ derby schedules are set to commence in two weeks’ time.
