Queenstown police officer helps woman deliver at police station

A female police officer at Mlungisi Police Station in Mlungisi, Queenstown, has been hailed as a local heroine after going beyond the call of duty and helping to deliver a baby boy at the station.

According to police spokesperson, Captain Namhla Mdleleni, a woman, who was feeling labour pains, came to the Mlungisi Police Station requesting assistance in calling an ambulance.

"On her arrival, police realised that it was too late and that she was close to giving birth," described police spokesperson, Captain Namhla Mdleleni.

"Constable Nomakhaya Xezu quickly assessed the situation and took the woman to a room for privacy and assisted the lady in giving birth to a lovely baby boy."

She said that the ambulance arrived later and the child and mother were taken to Frontier Hospital for examination.

Acting Station Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Xolani Salinger commended Constable Xezu for her quick thinking in that situation and her willingness to go beyond the call of duty.
