REAL RESULTS: FitSmart: a healthy dose to your summer fitness training

If you spent the holidays eating, drinking and neglecting your usual fitness routines and now cannot find your motivation to visit the gym, you are not alone. Worse still, having started 2014 on a busy note, I thought I would not be able squeeze gym into my already hectic schedule. That was until I met Karen Dorfling, local personal fitness trainer and owner of FitSmart.

As a personal rule, I requested a meeting with her at her gym just to evaluate her facilities as well as (secretly) her personality and lifestyle - who would want to be trained by someone who does not demonstrate fitness in their own life, right?

On my arrival, I was warmly welcomed by Karen, who is also a Sports Science graduate. It was as if we had been friends for years. Throughout our meeting, she radiated energy, enthusiasm and courtesy and was very knowledgeable - just the companion one needs when trying to get in shape or step up your game.

My first impressions were that Karen Dorfling Sport and Fitness Studio, which is easily accessible from any direction in Newton Park, is small but spacious and has just about everything that you could need to sculpture your body and reach your health and wellbeing resolutions - a treadmill, elliptical, bicycle, bench press, single weights among other tools.

Karen also has a private massage room where you can enjoy a deserved pampering after your workouts. I loved everything I saw and promptly booked her for the following Wednesday.

Admittedly, on the Wednesday I felt too tired for a workout, but decided to still go. Karen started off with a fitness check – including on my weight and heart rate, after which she came up with a custom fitness routine for me. She was very supportive and assured me that I was not as bad as I thought I was.

The first day, we took it easy. We hit the treadmill, did squats, lunges and the trampoline for about 20 minutes. It was a great session and I had lots of fun. Karen went out of her way to keep my energy alive. Then, a few days later I found out that I was pregnant!

Thankfully, Karen came up with another suitable plan as I really wanted to continue with my workouts. I am grateful for all the effort Karen put in and her patience. Even during my current pregnancy, I look fit and lively!
