Red hot Audi RS6 Avant now available

Having been the recipient of a mid-life facelift in April, Audi South Africa has further bolstered its mid-range A6 line-up with the addition of the performance RS6 Avant.

Available in Europe since early 2013, the newcomer, as its name suggest, will only be offered as an estate following the dropping of the previous model’s sedan offering.

Compared with the standard A6, the RS6, apart from being the sole estate model in the range, features a wider front and rear track, 21-inch alloy wheels, RS-specific front and rear bumpers, brushed aluminium dual exhausts, black honeycomb grille with quattro badging on the lower airdam, black mirrors and a functioning rear diffuser.

In a departure from the normal quattro all-wheel system fitted to the normal A6, the RS6 features a self-locking centre differential allowing for an even power split between both axles. In addition, it also comes fitted as standard with Audi’s selective torque vectoring system and sport differential that sends power individually from side-to-side.

As with the recently launched TT, the RS6 also comes fitted with Audi Drive Select system which, combined with the adaptive air suspension, allows for the changing of damper setting depending preference.

Up front, the RS6 ditches its predecessor’s 5.0 TFSI V10 engine in favour of the same 4.0 TFSI V8 unit used in the RS7. Power is rated at 412 kW and 700 N.m of torque, while being harnessed through an eight-speed Tiptronic gearbox. Top speed is rated at 250 km/h with 0-100 km/h taking 3.9 secs.

Ticking the optional Dynamic Package Plus box however, ups the speed to 305 km/h and also adds ceramic brakes, dynamic steering, matrix LED headlights and sport suspension plus.

Standard equipment includes a 360 degree camera system, revised MMI infotainment system with 3G navigation and Audi Connect, RS sport seats finished in Alcantara, quad-zone climate control, electric front seats and electric bootlid.

A five year / 100 000 km Audi Freeway plan is included in the R1 465 000 price tag.
