Relative arrested for involvement in kidnapping of woman outside Peddie court and her murder

A 57-year-old female relative of a woman, who was kidnapped outside the Peddie Magistrate's Court and later murdered almost two weeks ago, is now expected in court after she was arrested at Mahlubini Locality,  Peddie, by police in connection with the murder and kidnapping of the victim.

"She will appear in the Peddie Magistrate's Court on Tuesday," said police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender.

Meanwhile, three suspects, including a teenager, who are alleged to have kidnapped the woman, now identified as 25-year-old Mrs Noluthabo Maliza, and later murdering her, appeared in the same court on Thursday and Friday and were remanded in custody until Friday the 27th for their bail application.

The men were arrested by detectives on Wednesday.

"Members of the team  investigating the kidnapping and  murder worked tirelessly since the report of this heinous crime and reported a breakthrough today [Wednesday]. Three male suspects were arrested," described Captain Naidu.

"Two of the suspects, aged 24 and 19,  were arrested in Peddie, whilst the third, aged 27, was traced to Mdantsane and arrested."

She said the Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga, commended the task team on the swift arrests.

"I am extremely pleased that we arrested those responsible for the senseless murder of this young woman. This is detective work at its best and total commitment to deliver the best possible service to our communities," she said.

Heinous crime 

The woman was kidnapped on Friday, 13 January.

"This follows after a distraught male reported that he had parked his vehicle at the Peddie Magistrate's court. He left his wife in the car with his cell phone and car keys," described Captain Govender then.

"When he returned to the place where he parked his car, both the car and his wife was nowhere to be seen! The matter was reported to the local SAPS, who immediately started a search for the 25-year-old woman and the vehicle."

The search continued on Saturday morning and the vehicle was located at the Qamnyana Administration Area in the Tyefu Policing Area.

"During the investigation and search of the vicinity, the body of a female identified as the missing woman was found close by.

"A post mortem will be conducted to establish the cause of death," said Captain Govender.

"Specialist investigators worked on the scene for several hours collecting evidence and clues.

An appeal was made to the public to assist in.the investigation with any useful information.

Brigadier David Kanuka the Cluster Commander of Grahamstown, who guided  the search team since the report, then expressed his sincere condolences to the family and friends of the slain victim and assured the community that he will leave no stone unturned to bring these ruthless perpetrators to book.

"I have a team of experienced detectives working on these cases which I'm also closely monitoring," he said.
