ROAD CLOSURE in Port Elizabeth

The Nelson Mandela Municipality hereby advises that its Main Library, located in Govan Mbeki Avenue, will be temporarily closed from Thursday, 11 September 2014 so that necessary repair and maintenance work can be undertaken, as a continuation of previous repairs undertaken.

The Main Library building is 113 years old and is registered as a Grade 2 heritage building. It is one of the few historical public buildings in the Central Business District.

During the repair period, no library services will be provided at the Main Library itself. However, mindful of the needs of users of the Main Library, particularly learners and students, who use the building as a study venue, the Municipality has established a temporary library on the ground floor of Kwantu Building, located across from the Main Library building on the Vuyisile Mini Square.

From Thursday, 11 September 2014, members of the public, including those  who would normally use services at the Main Library, may access the basic services provided at this temporary library (signage will direct users to the temporary library).

The Municipality appreciates the gesture of the owners of the building in leasing the space to the institution at half the established rate. The book-reading public of the Metro are also reminded of the fact that their library card gives them full access to all services at any of the remaining nineteen libraries currently operational in the Metro.

Users are therefore not restricted to the library at which they registered or the library located in their area of residence. Telephonic enquiries and requests for a book renewals must be made to tel (041) 5061338.

The Municipality apologises for the inconvenience caused to students and the users of the Main Library, but appeals for their understanding and patience while the necessary work is undertaken to ensure that this beautiful architectural treasure is properly maintained and preserved.
