Robbers flee empty handed after abducting security guard and failing to open ATM

Three Port Elizabeth robbers fled empty handed early this week after breaking into a shop and attempting to open an ATM.

According to police spokesperson, Captain Adre Beetge, a 43-year-old security guard was abducted on Tuesday night, at about 21:40, from his post at Boxer Stores, NU1, Ikamvelihle and forced him to lay down on the back seat of a vehicle in the parking area.

"Just before midnight, he was forced out of the vehicle in a sportsfield in NU4b Motherwell, and on his return to the premises of Boxer, discovered police, security and centre management," Capt Beetge described.

"There was a break in into the premises through a toilet wall behind the store while he was abducted.

"Three unknown males made a hole in the wall and entered the premises and attempted to open an ATM inside using a crowbar."

The alarm triggered and the suspects made off without getting any cash out of the ATM.

"Any person with information that could assist police in identifying the suspects can contact Ikamvelihle SAPS at 041 402 5216 or 08600 10111."
