'Robbery victim' appears in court for killing toddler with illegal firearm

A Port Elizabeth man is expected to appear in court on Monday for shooting and killing a three-year old boy and a dog in Gelvandale - in the city's northern suburbs.

According to Port Elizabeth police, the man claims to have been confronted by six men - armed with knives, who intended to rob him as he walked down a street in Gelvendale on Saturday.

That was when he pulled out a pulled a stolen and unlicensed firearm, and shot several shots at his attackers.

The bullets hit a dog and a boy who was nearby in the back. He died at the scene.

The man was arrested, and faces charges of murder, malicious damage to property and the unlawful possesion of a firearm and ammunition.
