Rugby: St Andrew's College vs Union High School

Rugby returned to Lower for the start of the 2017 season on Saturday as the new look St Andrew’s College 1st XV took on Union High School from Graaff-Reinet. The visitors started with intensity and put early pressure on St Andrew’s, but solid defence kept them out before a breakaway try by Matt More settled the early nerves.

A great run by full back Sean Varty down the blindside put Byron Sharwood away for another try soon after and put College into a 14-0 lead. Poor discipline by St Andrew's College resulted in a yellow card to Byron Sharwood and Union High got themselves on the scoreboard with a well taken penalty.

A further yellow card to flanker Graham de Vos meant that St Andrew’s College only had 13 players on the field but they responded with two quick tries, one by Robert Quarmby and another by Matt More, to go into the break 26-3 up.

Matt More continued to dominate after the break with some really strong running, to put early pressure on the Union High try line. A 5m scrum resulted in a further try by the big centre before further tries were added by William McAdam, Murray Wilson, and Jack Allanson. Union High must be commended for the manner in which they never gave up and continued to look to spread the ball, being rewarded with a try of their own.

Strong performances for St Andrew's came from lock Christian Roebert and eighth man Robert Quarmby. Matt More however was outstanding and scored 39 points on the day with five tries and seven conversions, College eventually running out 64-10 winners.
