SABC to appeal reinstatement of axed journalists

Lawyers representing the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) have reportedly confirmed in a letter to trade union Solidarity, that it would lodge an appeal against the reinstatement of four journalists axed for questioning the public broadcaster‘s decision not to air violent protests on television.

Tweeting an image of the document on Tuesday evening, Solidarity Chief Executive Dirk Hermann said the broadcaster’s legal representatives also stated that the journalists not return to work on Wednesday until the outcome of the appeal.

Hours before, the Labour Court ruled that the dismissal of Senior Investigate reporter Jacque Steenkamp, SAfm Current Affairs Executive Producer Krivani Pillay, Radio Sonder Grense (RSG) Executive Producer Foeta Krige and RSG Senior Journalist Suna Venter amounted to unfair labour practises, and that all disciplinary actions against them be dropped.

Hermann said the union would however serve the court with documents to have Steenkamp, Pillay, Krige and Venter back at work despite the SABC’s appeal.
