SACP and DA claim Thozama Njobe was 'assassinated' for standing against corruption

The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday said that it learnt with "great sense of shock and profound sadness of the cold-blooded murder" of Thozama Njobe, Council Speaker at the Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality and the Branch Secretary of the African National Congress (ANC).

The party said that Njobe was shot and killed in an execution style on Monday night at Fort Beaufort.

"We wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to her family, the Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality, the people of Raymond Mhlaba, the people of the entire province and the entire ANC led movement," said Siyabonga Mdodi, SACP Eastern Cape Provincial Spokesperson.

"We are calling upon the law enforcement authorities to act swiftly in bringing the perpetrators of this atrocious crime to book. It is important for all peace-loving people of the province to work with the law enforcement authorities in ending these crimes. We must work together to arrest the rise of this phenomenon as it starts to raise its ugly head."

Mdodi said that the SACP condemns "this atrocious act of what appears to be an assassination".

"We hope this is not linked to factional proxy battles and politics of rent-seeking in the ANC. Our province has always been characterized by the culture of political tolerance, and so it should remain," he said.

"In the event that this may be linked to any form of political intolerance whether within or outside the congress movement, it will be representing an unfortunate departure from how the province has always been politically.

"This we should see as a clarion call to us as the ANC led movement to unite and reactivate our organisations, the movement and our communities to fight against all social ills amongst other this."

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality said that her killing happened on the eve of Mandela Day "when we should all be celebrating peace and reconciliation in Madiba’s memory".

"Cllr Njobe was a crusader in the fight against corruption and this could have possibly led to her death, after getting shot near her home," said Nomvano Zibonda, the DA's Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality Caucus Leader .

Zibonda extended the DA's condolences to the Njobe family for their tragic loss.

"We call on the South African Police Service (SAPS) to expedite its investigation into the case and ensure that that those responsible face the full might of the law.

"Councillor Njobe will be remembered for her courage and willingness to expose corruption."
