Sangweni stars with uncertainty as Chippa show redemption

Chippa United managed to show redemption on Saturday when they beat the struggling Highlands Park 2-0 at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane.

This came after another narrow loss suffered on Wednesday, when they went 1-0 down to Polokwane City – but the Chilli Boys relinquished the opportunity to bag three table points against a down-and-out outfit, for which they did.

Shots from both ends of Chippa’s attacking platform saw strikers, Katlego Mashego and Lerato Manzini, contribute to the score tally, while Thamsanqa Sangweni was voted as man-of-the-match for his exploits against Highlands Park.

Sangweni is deemed one of the best midfielders in the country with his resilience at mid-field, and his ability to pass along short or long deliveries for interconnections with teammates.

The 27-year-old, however, has remained humble regardless of his steaming form of late and believes there’s still room for improvement and emphasizes the importance of an overall collective effort.

“I think I can still do more. I do all I can to contribute to the success of the team but this is not possible without the support from amajita (my teammates). I am getting lot of support from my teammates and the Technical Team has been equally fantastic,” Sangweni told the Chippa United media forum.

“I do not think I am playing my best football yet. There are areas of my game that need polishing, and I work hard every day to improve. I believe that I can do more,” he added.

Meanwhile, Chippa United are in a race against time to land a new deal with Sangweni, with no new official signature to sign the player for a renewed contract.

His current contract will come to an end in June 2017 and if talks or negotiations do not take stage over the next few weeks, the Chilli Boys could risk losing him towards the end of the season; with the player then able to sign a pre-contract elsewhere.

Chippa United are set to play the 11-placed Ajax Cape Town on Wednesday night in the Cape Town Stadium for their final match before the New Year break. Chippa are currently placed 10th on thd ABSA Premiership table.
