SANTACO Eastern Cape chairperson Noluntu Mahashe survives assassination attempt

Police in East London have opened investigations after a 62-year-old woman, who is also the Provincial Chairperson of South Africa National Taxi Council (SANTACO), Noluntu Mahashe, was shot and wounded on Thursday morning, at her home at Morningside, East London.

According to the police, it is alleged that a suspect entered her house pretending to be seeking information about joining the taxi industry and while Mahashe was still assisting him and seeking more information over her phone, the suspect shot her in the stomach and fled.

“On his way out, he met with visitors, who were just parking in front of the house and opened fire on the driver - hitting him on the body,” said police spokesperson, Captain Mluleki Mbi.

He added that the motive for the attempted murder is unknown at this stage.

Both the woman and the man were taken to the local hospital.

"Two cases of attempted murder are under investigation."
