The intervention team deployed by the Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga on Saturday, is making their presence felt in the hotspot areas of Gelvandale, Bethelsdorp and the Motherwell Cluster.

According to police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu, the team consisting of 30 members from the National Intervention Unit, Tactical Response Team and Public Order Policing will perform duties at five stations across the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

"The team is concentrating on curbing the gang related incidents in the Northern areas as well as Trio crimes (House Robbery, Business Robbery and Carjacking) in the Motherwell cluster," she said.

"The execution of their duties started on Sunday afternoon with a heavy police presence in the Northern areas. During their tour of duty, no incidents of shooting were reported."

Wanted suspects traced and arrested

Col Naidu said that the Provincial Head: Detectives, Brig Dan Bohata, worked with Gelvandale detectives on Friday in tracing wanted suspects.

"A total of 9 suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from assault GBH, assault, malicious damage to property and possession of drugs."

Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga stated that "we seek to address crime and violence in these areas in a proactive manner and also to enhance an integrated approach to safety.

"We will continue to intensify our actions in both of these clusters until we are satisfied that the area has stabilised and the communities are safe. We have also sent a tracing team from the Provincial office to assist detectives to track down wanted and dangerous criminals."

She once again appealed to communities to work with the police towards our common goal of ensuring safety of citizens.

"We cannot and will not tolerate lawlessness as we stamp the authority of the State on criminals. We need to confiscate illegal firearms that are used in the commission of serious crimes," added Lt Gen Ntshinga.
