Sarah Baartman District continues to grapple with drought

Kirkwood - The Sarah Baartman District Municipality, which covers seven local municipalities, is still battling with the persistent drought and water shortage across the district.

"The current weather forecasts show that the following three months will be particularly dry with minimal rainfall projected across the district," described Natasha Peterson, Communications Officer at the Sarah Baartman District Municipality.

The current dam levels in the district are:

  • Kouga Dam – 8.6%
  • Impofu Dam – 17%
  • Nqweba Dam – 19.6%
  • Groendal Dam – 31.1%
  • Loerie Dam – 46.1%
  • Churchill Dam – 60.67%

"Residents are urged to use water sparingly and adhere to a limit of 25 litres per person a day for a maximum of four (4) people per household.  Residents are also requested to report water leaks to their respective local municipality and to follow water saving tips," Pterson said.

"The municipality also encourages community members to continue adhering to the hygiene tips issued by the Department of Health in relation to Covid-19, such as washing hands regularly with soap and water."

Here is some basic water saving tips for your home:

  • Use grey water for gardening or to flush the toilet.
  • Turn off the tap when you are brushing your teeth or shaving. Alternatively use a cup of water to brush your teeth.
  • Report and fix water leaks.
  • Fill a 2L bottle with grey water or sand and place it in the cistern of all your toilets, to reduce the amount of water needed to flush.
  • Take shorter showers.
