Port Alfred - SIX professional boxers from the Sarah Baartman District Municipality (SBDM) will have a chance to display their boxing talent in the ring at the Jonas Titi Community Hall in Port Alfred on Sunday 6 October.

The six, from at least three local municipalities in the district will take part in the Zulu Sports Promotions (ZSP) in conjunction with the Ndlambe Local Municipality development-boxing tournament themed “Now or never”.

Topping the six-bout bill and probably facing the biggest challenge will be Port Alfred’s Ndikho “Destroyer” Magadaza who will be facing Thembelani “Guitar Man” Okolo of Port Elizabeth for the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) All-Africa Mini-flyweight title over 10 rounds.

Magadaza has fought against the best fighters in the country including SA Flyweight kingpin Xolisa Magusha and former ABU Min-flyweight champion Ayanda Ndulani. Against Okolo, he will be facing another tested led who is also hoping to catapult himself to stardom.

“Okolo must be prepared to fight because Magadaza is not a slouch. We are ready for the fight and promise local boxing fans the title will remain here in the Ndlambe Local Municipality,” said Magadaza’s mentor, Mbulelo Veto, adding that they have always been hoping to grab such an opportunity with both hands.

In the main-supporting bout, Sonwabo Twatwa of Makana Local Municipality will also be facing a mammoth task against former SA Junior-flyweight champion Bongani Silila of East London over six flyweight rounds. Siphosethu Zingela of Makana Local Municipality will lock horns with Mbulelo Nkenke of Port Elizabeth over four bantamweight rounds in the main preliminary bout.

Phumelela Mayi (Makana Local Municipality) a flyweight and Siyabonga Mtsatse (Lightweight) of the Ndlambe Local Municipality will trade leather with Yanga Vaba (Port Elizabeth) and Bongani Fule (Makana) respectively. Their bouts will both be over four rounds.

In the sixth bout, Ayanda Fatyi of Port Elizabeth will face former SA Junior Flyweight champion Mfundo Gwayana of Mdantsane over four rounds in the bantamweight division.

The first bout starts at 2pm. Admission is R100 a couple, R60 single and R30 children.

“I’d like to thank the Ndlambe Local Municipality and local businesses for sponsoring the event and urge boxing lovers here and surrounding areas to come in droves to support this initiative. We want to take boxing to all corners of the province and getting the support from fans would encourage us,” said ZSP boss Bongani Zulu who mentioned that he brought boxers from Nelson Mandela Bay and Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipalities together with the Sarah District Municipality to showcase their talent in this Now or Never Tournament.
