SASCO-led NMU SRC cannot account for nearly R4 million: DASO

The Democratic Alliance Student Organisation (DASO) at the Nelson Mandela University says it is extremely concerned about the apparent lack of financial records for the nearly R4 million that the South African Students Congress (SASCO)-led Student Representative Council (SRC) spent in the last year.

"These funds were supposed to be used for projects that would benefit the students," said  Kwanda Jakalse - DASO Nelson Mandela University Chairperson.

Jakalse said that DASO NMU has on numerous occasions, requested from SASCO convener, Pedro Mzileni, the financial statements detailing all transactions that had been processed.

"To date, Mr Mzileni has failed to even respond to emails and messages sent to him and his appointed structure," he said.

"DASO has now raised this issue with the Dean of Students, Luthando Jack, and we will also submit a Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) application to obtain the financial records of the SRC."

Jakalse said that the R4 million in question is money deducted from the students’ accounts to fund programmes and events that will benefit them.

"The students therefore have the right to know what the money was actually used for," he added.

"DASO will not be deterred and remains committed to advocate for a transparent and accountable SRC. We will not rest until we have ascertained exactly what this money was spent on."
