Schauderville man arrested with firearm stolen in Makhanda

Gelvandale - A 40-year-old Schauderville man is appearing in the Gelvandale Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on a charge of illegal possession of a firearm m and ammunition.

"It is alleged that on Monday evening, at about 23:30, Port Elizabeth Public Order Policing members received information of a firearm at a house in Lawler Street Schauderville," said police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu.

"A.38 revolver and four rounds of ammunition was found hidden in a corner of the room.

"The suspect was arrested and detained."

Col Naidu said that the firearm was reported stolen in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown) in April 2019.

In another incident, on Monday, at about 09:30 SAPS Gelvandale members acted on information received of a shotgun hidden on the roof of a house in Hartebees Street in Helenvale.

"The shotgun was found in a black bag on top of the toilet roof. The shotgun was reported stolen in Pearson in May 2016. No arrests were made."

Mount Road SAPS Cluster Commander, Maj Gen Thembisile Patekile, thanked the community for providing information to the police.

"The continued recovery and seizure of firearms is a deterrent for the commission of serious and violent crimes. I continue to urge the community to be our eyes and ears by providing information on criminal activities," added Maj Gen Patekile.
