Schools advised to cancel sport as discomfort levels climb in the Eastern Cape

Most areas in the Eastern Cape had recorded a discomfort index of 100 and above by 11am on Wednesday, the South African Weather Service office in Port Elizabeth warned.

"Other areas are fast approaching this level," said Garth Sampson, Client Liaison Officer for the Eastern Cape at the South African Weather Service.

"Schools are advised to cancel sport."

 Discomfort levels recorded

  • 105      Port Elizabeth, Patensie, Addo, Fort Beaufort, Somerset East
  • 102      Joubertina, Uitenhage, Port Alfred, Bisho/King Williams Town, Mthatha
  • 98        Coega, East London, Graaf Reinett, Cradock

"The SW wind has just come through at Port Elizabeth and cooling can be expected along the coast from the west," Sampson said.

Discomfort Index

When temperature and humidity are high at the same time, humans ability to cool their bodies through sweating are reduced. This can be a real threat:

Precautions

  • Stay indoors in a cool room near a fan if possible
  • The old and infirm must take extra care
  • Listen to the radio or TV for warnings.
  • Cease strenuous outdoor activity if advised
  • Avoid playing sport
  • Dress in light weight clothes
  • Drink plenty of liquids NOT alcohol

The temperature in a motor-car can rise to more than 10 degrees higher than the outside temperature in just 10 minutes and 20 C in 30 minutes. . Do not leave pets or children in motor-cars, especially in hot conditions.
