Schools remain closed due to Zwelihle protests, Cele to visit on Friday

Overstrand Municipality Executive Mayor, Dudley Coetzee, on Tuesday said that Police Minister, Bheki Cele, and Special Advisor to Police, Lennit Max, will visit Zwelihle on Friday following violent housing protests in Hermanus.

"It is confirmed that , 20 July 2018.

"Things were generally quiet overnight, with an isolated incident in the early hours that needed action by POP. Still Street has been closed due to structural damages. The R43 is open, but all access roads to Zwelihle are closed.  A full contingent of SAPS, POP and LE is on the scene," said Coetzee.

"Zwelihle schools and Mt Pleasant Primary will not open today after the winter holiday break due to protesting and in the interest of the children’s safety. Other government schools in the area have opened.

:The Western Cape Government: Health confirms that the Hermanus Community Day Centre will remain closed from Monday, as advised by SAPS due to the current volatile situation in Zwelihle. Patients are asked to visit the Hermanus Hospital to collect chronic medication for medical treatment and emergencies."

He said that refuse removal will continue as per the normal Tuesday schedule (Onrus, Chanteclair, Berghof, Sandbaai, Hemel-en-Aarde). Bear in mind that trucks must drive to the Karwyderskraal landfill site as Hermanus Transfer Station is not operational.

"A very big thank you to the public who continue to generously donate and deliver food to those in uniform who are doing their utmost to contain the situation," Coetzee added.

"I welcome the initiative where volunteers are rendering all kinds of services at restaurants and business establishments all over Hermanus in order to welcome and service tourists to our town, thus keeping the economy ticking over."
