Seaside getaway: “The Friendliest Hotel in the Friendly City”

Seaside getaway: “The Friendliest Hotel in the Friendly City”

As a student one of my favourite hangouts was the Humewood Hotel on Beach Road, Port Elizabeth.  My mates and I and a whole load of other students would sit on the veranda on a Friday afternoon, with a cold one in hand, and watch the world go past.  That was a long time ago and much has changed since.

These days the Humewood Hotel with its 3-Star rating is respected stop over for businessman and tourist.  It’s ideal location, close to the PE International Airport and the freeway system lends, itself to the business community and with the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment Complex, McArthur Swimming Baths as well as many other local attractions and activities within walking distance it attracts both local and international tourists too.

The hotel, which has been around since the early 1900’s, has a distinct holiday feel about it. The patio doors that open onto the veranda and the awesome view of Kings Beach certainly help with vacation effect.  The staff members are very friendly and professional, and in my experience do their best to assist - let’s just say that the service is top notch.

Each room at the Humewood Hotel has a holiday feel too.  The cane furniture, light woodwork and marine colours create a spacious, neat and light hearted feel. There is also air-conditioning in every room, with satellite television, tea/coffee making facilities, direct dial telephones and en-suite bathrooms. They also offer their guests free Wi-Fi throughout the whole building and secure parking.

There are two dining areas within the hotel, the Coffee Shop and the Sandpiper Restaurant, making it very convenient for those not wanting to venture out for a meal. Meals from the The Coffee Shop may also be enjoyed on the veranda that is shared with the Quarter Deck Bar. It’s a great place from which to watch the world go by and to enjoy the splendid view of Algoa Bay. The difference between now and when I was a student is that the clientele are less raucous. A full buffet breakfast is served here daily and is inclusive in the accommodation rate.

A full buffet dinner is served at the Sandpiper restaurant every evening, and their menu offers a wide variety to suit any taste. They also offer lunch and a special Sunday lunch buffet.

The Humewood Hotel also has two banqueting rooms for small meetings of up to 20 people. The Sandpiper Restaurant can be used for day conferences for a maximum of 40 delegates and also caters for functions of up to 80 guests.

From beautiful rooms, to tasty meals, to an absolutely amazing view of Algoa Bay, it is no wonder why this is a hotel loved by locals or travellers alike!
