Shark warning issued for Groot Bank in Plettenberg Bay

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and the Bitou Municipality on Friday issued a shark warning after a reported increase in sharks at Groot Bank, Plettenberg Bay.

According to Marc Rodgers, NSRI Plettenberg Bay station commander, NSRI Plettenberg Bay and Bitou Municipal authorities are urging public caution to bathers and paddlers along the Plettenberg Bay coastline.

"This is due to confirmed increase shark activity inshore along the coastline of sharks attracted to and feeding on a juvenile Humpback whale carcass that has washed ashore amongst rocks at Groot Bank, close to Keurboomstrand, off-shore of the Salt River, Groot Bank area, Plettenberg Bay."

Bitou Municipal Solid Waste Removal are also investigating options to remove or dispose of the carcass.

"This safety alert is current and in place to warn the public of the present danger of increased shark activity brought by this whale carcass and we urge public caution."
