Situation calm in Mthatha after threats to bring town to a standstill

Police on Monday continued to monitor the situation at Mthatha after threats to close down the town on Monday were received.

According police information, officers continued with a heavy presence and high visibility patrol of Mthatha and surroundings.

"Roadblocks were also done on all the entry roads to the town including Vigdesville, Port St Johns, Engcobo and Qumbu and Tsolo routes," said police spokesperson, Captain Khaya Tonjeni. 

"Police removed a few burning tyres in different parts of the town. No arrests were effected and no injuries reported.

"Shops have opened and there appears to be relative calm in the towns and neighbouring area."

He added that police, Eastern Cape provincial traffic, King Sabata Dalindyebo Traffic and Law enforcement, NIU and Stabilising Team will continue with visibility and heavy presence throughout the week.
