Sixteen suspects arrested for family murder in Mount Frere

Sixteen (16) suspects, aged between 23 and 71 years have been arrested for the murder of two (2) family members at Green Location, Mvuzi Administrative Area, Mount Frere on the 9th of September 2014 at about 14:00.

It is alleged that a 64 year old woman and a  59 year old male were assaulted and murdered by the suspects who also burnt the deceased’s homes.

The motive for the murders is not known at this stage but allegations of “witch-craft” and a possible land dispute between the deceased and other community members have been made. The suspects will soon appear in the Mount Frere Magistrate Court, facing murder and arson charges.

“We strongly condemn this type of violent and unlawful behavior. We urge the community members to stop accusing each other of witchcraft and to learn to tolerate each other. Where people have differences, they must find ways and means of resolving their differences, by involving the local community structures to assist them.

“No one has the right to take the law into their own hands and under no circumstances will we allow this to happen. Those responsible for the murders will be brought before court to account for their actions,” said Lt General Celiwe Binta earlier today.
