Solidarity questions van Rooyen’s capabilities

Trade union Solidarity has accused President Jacob Zuma of being reckless in replacing Nhlanhla Nene with David van Rooyen as new Finance Minister.

In a statement, the union’s Deputy Head John Kruger said Zuma’s surprise cabinet reshuffle on Wednesday evening, could cost the country’s economy dear as little is known about van Rooyen.

“van Rooyen by no means has the necessary experience and political and economic insight to solve the country’s financial and economic crises. On the contrary, his appointment stands to cost South Africa,” Kruger said.

He also stated that van Rooyen’s involvement with Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) could point to his replacing of Nene being politically driven, and that questions about his capability remain unanswered following a disastrous spell as Mayor of the struggling Merafong Local Municipality in Gauteng two years ago.
