St. Andrews show promise at Grey High U15 water polo tournament

The St Andrew’s College U15A Water Polo team headed to their first tournament of 2017 last weekend, the Grey High School U15 water polo festival. The team started strong accounting for Glenwood House 10 -0.

They beat Grey College Bloemfontein 7-3, Pearson 4-1 and Kingswood 11-0. In their last pool game they came up against tournament hosts Grey High. The team acquitted themselves well but eventually ran out of steam and lost 6-2. However they ended second in their pool and moved into a quarterfinal against Grey U15B team, who they dually beat 9-4.

On to the semi-final, where they would face pre-tournament favourites Selborne College. The SAC U15s started very slowly, going into the last chukka trailing 4-1. Then started the fight back, as the team clawed their way to 4 all through incredible goals by Joel Vides and Reece Galloway. With 40 seconds left the St Andrew’s College team went up 5-4 through another Joel vides goal.

Selborne though had other plans and managed to sneak a goal with 6 seconds left on the clock. A draw meant, the team would enter into their first ever penalty shout out. In dramatic fashion Nic Sutherland came to the rescue as he saved 2 out of 3 penalties to win the match for his team. This is an outstanding achievement by this hard working College team as they lost 16-2 to this very same selborne team 1 year ago.

The St Andrew’s College boys were destined for the finals and their opponents were Grey High school. In front of a packed Grey water polo stadium, the College boys put up an inspiring fight but could not match the Grey team on this occasion and lost 5-3. It was a superb match with Nic Sutherland being named player of the match.
