Stage One load shedding from 5pm

Eskom has announced stage 1 load shedding from 5pm on Tuesday. It had warned of the high probability for evening load shedding.

On Monday, Eskom implemented Stage 1 load shedding from 5pm, which was escalated to Stage 2 a few minutes after 6pm. The power utility cited a shortage of generating capacity "as several units are currently out of service due to maintenance".

"Eskom would like to assure customers that load shedding is implemented as a necessary measure to protect the power system. Any additional changes on the already constrained power system could lead to a change in the stage of load shedding at short notice," the utility said.

Eskom has called on consumers to continue to reduce their electricity usage especially during the peak periods from 6am to 10am and 5pm to 9pm.

The power utility implemented Stage 1 load shedding on Sunday for the first time in ten days.

Meanwhile, the National Energy Regulator (NERSA), which will only announce its final decision on Eskom’s application for a 25.3% tariff increase for the current financial year at the end of June, says it needs your opinion on the matter.

Nersa is encouraging members of the public to actively participate in this process by submitting written comments and attending or making oral representation at the public hearings to be held from 23 to 24 June 2015.

The public have to make submissions* until June 15.

Public hearings will be held for two days around June 24 and Nersa hopes to take a final tariff determination on June 29.

Thereafter Eskom will have to translate the average increase into detailed tariffs that Nersa has to approve before it can be implemented.

Municipalities will have to translate it into their own tariff systems and only after these tariffs have been approved by Nersa, will municipal tariff increases be approved.
