Stirling 1st boys’ water polo team wins Port Rex knockout, shows promise at ITEC Tournament

Stirling High School 1st boys’ water polo team won the Port Rex Water Polo Knockout Tournament in East London last weekend with four straight victories leading to the title.

With 16 school 1st team sides taking part in the knockout, Stirling’s path to the final and title saw them beat Merrifield College (East London) 10-1, then back-to-back victories against two PE schools -  Grey High in the quarter-finals 8-2 and Pearson High in the semi-finals 6-3.

In the final, Stirling played a deadlock match-up, worthy of the finale spectacle for the occasion, as they faced Northwood from Durban for the title-claim. At the conclusion of the game, the scores were levelled 4-4, and after the match was contrived to penalty-shootouts, the scores were still tied at 7-7; after all five players from each side took their shots at goal.

The match then succumbed to a sudden-death showdown, which saw each side taking shots in tandem, before Stirling goal-keeper, Nathan Taylor, reached well onto the right-side goal post to save an excellent goal-attempt for Northwood. Stirling then managed to just execute their chance of scoring, when an eventual goal won them the final and title 12-11.

Yesterday, Thursday 26th January, the Stirling 1st team boys’ water polo took part in the ITEC Grey College U18 Water Polo tournament in Bloemfontein, with the East London side beating Affies 4-2 and St. Peters College 6-4 respectively. They then went on to lose to Clifton 8-4 earlier on Friday, 27th January, morning in their third and final group game match-up.

So far, the Stirling 1st team boys have now won six of their seven games in the 2017 season and show some significant promise as a Border representative moving forward.
