Stolen firearm recovered, duo arrested with suspected stolen medication

On Sunday, at about 11:00, Bethelsdorp Task Team members were patrolling one of the hotspot areas in Kleinskool in Bethelsdorp when they spotted a suspicious looking male sitting in Ceretonia Street.

"When he spotted the police vehicle, he got up and started running," described police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu.

"As he ran, he threw a firearm in the yard of one of the houses."

She said that a 9mm pistol was recovered.

"The firearm was reported stolen in the Swartskop area in October 2010."

Col Naidu said that the suspect managed to evade arrest.

"An enquiry docket was opened."

Meanwhile, in another incident, at about 10:15, Mount Road SAPS members arrested two males and detained them on a charge of possession of suspected stolen property.

"It is alleged that members were patrolling in Middel Avenue in North End, Port Elizabeth, when they noticed the men exiting an alleged drug post," said Col Naidu.

"When they noticed the police vehicle, they became hesitant."

She said that the police officers stopped them and on searching their bag, toiletries and household medication (Citro Soda, Gaviscon, and other digestive medication) was found inside.

"They could not afford a reasonable explanation from where they got these items nor could they produce a receipt."

Both suspects, aged, 25 and 28 years old, were detained at SAPS Mount Road.

She said that the estimated value of the goods is R1 500.

"They are expected to appear in court soon."
