While news of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) renaming itself to Nelson Mandela University (NMMU) was somewhat well-received by students and other parties, it is the university’s new logo that got many talking.

Students at the university took to social media to share their thoughts on the new name and the new logo.

While many welcomed the idea of being part of a university that bears the name of the late global icon, Nelson Mandela, others were unhappy about the name change calling it an unnecessary cost that comes at a time when many students are struggling to afford fees – money that was used for the name change could have been used to fund underprivileged students, they argued.

“This name change is nothing more than a slap in the face of those students battling the economic oppression that prohibits them from advancing themselves in our democratic dispensation,” said student, Joshua Dickinson.

“I love the new Nelson Mandela University logo, simple and nice,” said Aya Mbunyuza.

“Nelson Mandela University is changing their name to Mandela University and that's creating a buzz. Why? Am I missing something?” questioned Unathi Kwaza.

“Thank God NMMU is now Nelson Mandela University. That NMMU abbreviation was difficult to pronounce,” said another student.

“How much did it cost to change NMMU to Nelson Mandela University?” asked Tumel Oditle.

“NMMU is dropping "Metropolitan" in the institution name to Nelson Mandela University. It would be nice if they would drop the fees as well,” said Anda Maqanda.

Some students also took aim at the university’s new logo as too plain, uncreative and uninspiring.

Other students also believe that this will not be the last time the name of the university changes and expect it to happen again sometime in the future.

The change of the name for the university has been long in the works, as it has been trying to drop the ‘Metropolitan’ section of the name since 2005. The name was meant to be changed in October last year, but had to be pushed back due to the #FeesMustFall protests.

The new name and logo of Nelson Mandela University has been placed on the Main Building in South Campus and the new flags are flying across all campuses in the Eastern Cape and in George.
