Stutterheim police say protesters forced businesses to close doors

Stutterheim police are monitoring the situation in the town, which has been described as empty as a result of the ongoing often violent service delivery protests that began in October.

"Protesters in town threatened business owners to close their shops," described police spokesperson, Captain Siphokazi Mawisa.

"A small group of about 50 people wanted the employees in the firms to be released."

She said that on Monday morning, the protesters also went into town and blocked the main road with refuse bins.

"Police were compelled to use reduced rubber rounds to disperse the unruly and aggressive crowd," Capt Mawisa said.

"SAPS are monitoring the situation. No arrests have been made."
