Stutterheim residents appear in court over violent protests

Sixteen suspects appeared before the Stutterheim Magistrate's Court on Thursday following deadly service delivery protests that saw the destruction of public infrastructure this week.

Besides blocking off roads around the town, protesters in Stutterheim are alleged to have torched four government buildings, including one clinic.

The protest began on Tuesday and one person was confirmed dead after apparently police used live rounds to disperse the protesting residents.

"Two juveniles were released on warning to their parents," said police spokesperson, Siphokazi Mawisa.

"Sixteen suspects that appeared at court on Thursday for Public Violence were granted bail.

"They were all warned to appear again at Stutterheim Magistrate Court on 08 November 2018."

She said that the community members went to Mlungisi Stadium to be addressed by Minister for Rural Development and Agrarian Reform, MEC Xolile Nqatha.

"The situation is under control and POPS and Local Police are monitoring the area."
