Summerwood Primary hosted sublime U13 7s cricket tournament

Summerwood Primary School hosted an U13 cricket 7s tournament on Saturday, 4 February. 7s cricket is a high-energy, fast-paced version of the game that attracts the attention of players and spectators around the world.

Each game consisted of 6 overs with each player, except the wicketkeeper, bowling 1 over.  Batsmen could bat until they were dismissed.  Contrary to belief, its not all about hitting boundaries, but also running well between the wickets and rotating strike.

It was well supported with a number of local primary schools attending, including Verkenner, Sunridge, Kabega, Rowallan Park, Lorraine and Sonop. The event was made possible by the generous sponsorships received from Dewald van Eyk of Klinicare, Lorraine, Silver Falls Trading and Powerade.

This year marks the first tournament of this kind in the local school circuit. It was initiated by Mr. Jeremey Pettit to increase the participation of schools in cricket festivals in the Port Elizabeth area.  Very few cricket festivals of any nature is held throughout the Eastern Cape, therefore it was decided to organize an cricket event of this nature.

The true spirit of the game of cricket was displayed at the tournament and fun was had by all; whether they played in the competition, supported loved ones, or were involved in the development of these young sportsmen. The cup final was contested by Sunridge Primary and Lorraine Primary, both doing very well on the day.

Sunridge Primary walked away as the overall Cup winners on the day.  Stefan Scholtz from Sunridge, receiving the Man of the Series award.  In the Shield final, Summerwood A beat Kabega Primary to receive the Shield trophy.
