Sunshine Coast Studios produce 13-part sitcom for National TV in PE

SABC 2 has commissioned a Sitcom called ‘Kniediep in die warm water’to a Port Elizabeth-based production company, namely Sunshine Coast Studios. This project was initiated for three main reasons; to transfer skills to PE locals, to develop the film industry in PE and hence; to create jobs in the future.

It has also attracted opportunities for destination marketing through location scouting, accommodating crew and cast, and social media discussions around the project.

The leads are played by Jacques Gombault and Chanelle De Jager, with supporting roles done by well-known Clara Joubert and Fiks Mahola. There will also be appearances from PE-based newcomers to the television industry; Lisa-Marie Arthur who works at Kingfisher FM radio station, Heather Baartman and Benito Carelse. Not to mention special guest stars; Eric Nobbs, Carel Trichardt, Petro Wessels and Nomhle Nkonyeni.

The Director, David Lister, is well-known for direct Oh Shucks! Here comes UNTAG, Known Gods and Konings, comes highly recommended by the industry as he brings years of experience to the project. His beautiful character gives our creative team the willing spirit to excel and bring their A game. David is selfless in sharing his knowledge and has been the golden thread on the production.

“We had a great cast and a great production team and thanks to Nicola and Colin for their constant support and help throughout this shoot. It was great, I’m sure many people will enjoy the series and I’m sure that they will get a second series,” said Director David Lister.

Colin Ward and Nicola Barbour are the producers of the new series and owners of Sunshine Coast Studios. Together they were able to co-ordinate trading across the project in all departments; i.e. lighting, art, wardrobe, camera and acting.

This project has attracted over R4million revenue in terms of:

- Location hire & Props Hire

- Transport hire and Car rentals for production use

- Accommodation hire for cast and crew

- Production office hire

- Studio hire

- Catering services

- Crew and Cast

Of the total 32 Cast and Crew members, 20 locals have benefited from across the budget.

A further indirect investment of Training and Development of R1Million has been invested to train and up-skill crew and cast by bringing in experienced Heads of Departments and four A-list Actors.

This has allowed PE Production Company, Sunshine Coast Studios, to deliver a world-class project and ensure that the budget is delivered according to the broadcaster’s requirements. Through this initiative Sunshine Coast was able to start pre-production in July, and production in August and September, thus making it possible for an early 2018 broadcast, the date of airing though is still unconfirmed.
