Suspect arrested after couple attacked and woman raped near Fort Hare University

Swift reaction by Alice FCS Detectives led to the arrest of a 39-year-old suspect on Monday morning, at about 11:00, in Alice.

"The arrest follows after a rape incident was reported to Alice SAPS on Sunday night, at about 21:00," described police spokesperson, Captain Sibongile Soci.

"According to the report, two adult persons, a male aged 24 and a female aged 22, were pointed with a knife and tied near Stewart Memorial."

The Stewart Memorial Tower is sited on the crest of Sandili's Kop, a conical, flat topped hill to the east of the Alice campus of the University of Fort Hare. The prominent, elevated site has made the Tower a significant landmark in the Town of Alice and the surrounding landscape.

"The perpetrator allegedly raped the female," he said.

"The suspect then fled the scene leaving the two, who managed to untie themselves and reported the ordeal to the police."

Captain Soci said that a case of rape was immediately registered and detectives followed up the leads, which resulted in the arrest on Monday morning.

The suspect is expected to appear at Alice Magistrate's Court soon facing a charge of rape.
