Suspect arrested after duo rob Gelvandale home and rape woman

A 24-year-old suspect was arrested by the Gelvandale Trio Task Team for house robbery and rape on Monday as part of efforts to address trio crimes in the Mount Road SAPS Cluster.

"It is alleged that during the early hours of Monday morning, two suspects kicked opened a door at a house in Barcelona, in Gelvandale, Port Elizabeth," said police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu.

"The four occupants were locked in a room while the suspects ransacked the house.

"Cash, a TV, cellphones and other household items were taken."

Col Naidu said that a 25-year-old female was allegedly raped by one suspect.

"At about 13:30, the same day, Gelvandale detective members arrested the suspect in Reynecke Street. 

"Some cash and two cellphones were found in his possession," she said.

"He was detained for house robbery, rape and possession of suspected stolen property."

Col Naidu said that the case is being investigated by the Port Elizabeth Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.

The Cluster Commander for Mount Road Cluster, Maj Gen Funeka Siganga, said that  "crimes relating to gender based violence is a priority for the SAPS and perpetrators will be harshly dealt with. The swift arrest by Gelvandale detective members is an indication that the SAPS is serious in combatting serious and violent crimes against women, children and the vulnerable."
