Suspect shot and wounded, policeman escapes injury following Humewood house robbery

A 33-year-old suspect is recovering at a local hospital after he was shot and wounded by Port Elizabeth police following a house robbery in Humewood, Port Elizabeth, early on Tuesday morning.

According to police information a 28-year-old man, who resides in a flat along Windermere Street, Humewood, heard a noise in his lounge shortly after midnight and went to investigate.

The man was then confronted by three suspects, who threatened him with a knife and ordered him to lie on the floor.

The suspects stole clothing and the man’s Golf 7 GTI before fleeing.

Port Elizabeth police were informed and subsequently spotted the vehicle about 30 minutes later along Standford Street. A police car chase ensued after the suspects noticed the police.

It is further alleged that the suspects fired shots at the pursuing police car and in turn the police opened fire on the fleeing suspects.

As a result, one of the suspects was injured in the hand and upper body.

A police officer also escaped unscathed after a bullet apparently grazed his uniform.

The suspects abandoned the vehicle and two managed to flee on foot leaving their wounded comrade.

Police said that the injured man will appear in court soon and will be charged with house robbery and attempted murder.

Apparently, the men had gained entry to the flat through a semi-opened balcony window.
