Suspect swiftly arrested after teen found raped and murdered

Butterworth police on Thursday arrested a 21-year-old man for the alleged rape and murder of a 15-year-old girl.

"It is alleged that the alleged rape took place on Wednesday, at about 22:00 at Mazizini Location, Cerhu Village, Butterworth. It is believed that the suspect strangled the victim after raping her as she had no visible injuries," said police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

"The body of the deceased was found by a passerby near Cerhu river at Cerhu Village, Butterworth, on Thursday, at about 14:00.

"The expeditious investigation of Butterworth police led to the arrest of the suspect."

Captain Manatha said that it is not clear where the suspect was coming from or going to.

"It is also not clear where the victim was also coming from or going to at the time of the offence.

"The suspect has been charged with rape and murder. He will appear before the Butterworth Magistrate Court on Tuesday 02 January 2018," he added.

"The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of all her relatives about her murder."

Acting Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Major General Andre Swarts, condemned the rape and murder of the 15-year-old deceased.

He congratulated Butterworth Police for their swift actions in apprehending the suspect.
