Suspected Mthatha robbers busted with illegal firearms and cash

Mthatha - Two men, aged 26 and 30, were arrested by the Provincial TRT and Mthatha Pop members for possession of illegal firearms in the Nomadolo and Goso location in Ngqeleni in the early hours of Thursday.

"The operation was conducted after members received an information that led to positive results when the first suspect was found in possession of an AK47 Assault Rifle with no rounds and a .45 Wilson pistol with one round," said police spokesperson, Captain Dineo Koena.

"The second suspect was found in possession of an AK47 Assault Rifle with 4 rounds and a Star 9mm Pistol with four rounds as well as R26 000."

Capt Koena said that the suspects will be profiled and linked to robberies that occured around Mthatha.

"All the firearms will be sent for ballistic testing."

She said that the two suspects will appear before Ngqeleni Magistrate's Court soon facing charges of unlawfull possession of firearms, ammunition and possession of prohibited firearms in respect of the AK47 rifles.

"To all the hard core criminals, the net is closing on you. More arrests are imminent, we cannot tolerate any robbery especially in Mthatha," said the Acting Mthatha SAPS Cluster Commander, Brigadier Mandlakhe Twala.
