Suspected water meter thieves nabbed by East London police

East London - Police in East London arrested a man and a business owner for possession of suspected stolen water meters.

"Police responded to information that someone was busy tampering with municipal water meters around the Baysville area, in East London," said police spokesperson, Captain Mluleki Mbi.

"The suspect, a 27-year-old man, was found in possession of a water meter and also mandrax tablets and dagga bompies.

"Further investigations, lead the police to a scrap metal dealership at Southern wood, where he sells his loot."

Capt Mbi said that more water meters and taps were recovered from this dealership and the owner, a 22-year-old, was arrested for possession of suspected stolen property.

Mdantsane SAPS Cluster Commander, Major General Henry Vos, said he had been perturbed by the theft of non-ferrous metals as these acts disrupt people's daily lives and a huge inconvenience to our communities.

He thanked his members for their swift action.

The suspects will appear before the East London Magistrate’s Court on Friday facing charges of possession of suspected stolen property and possession of drugs respectively.
