Swift action by Despatch police leads to arrest of two and recovery of stolen goods

On Wednesday, at around 2am, police responded to a complaint of theft from a motor vehicle in progress at a house in Elizabeth Street, Heuwelkruin, Despatch.

"A police van was dispatched to the scene," described police spokesperson, Sergeant Majola Nkohli.

"Whilst on the scene, a few metres away, police noticed three men scaling a boundary wall and gave chase.

"The suspects fled towards the direction of nearby bushes. However, police managed to arrest the two men and recovered a backpack with a cellphone, a cellphone charger, a CD player and a GPS device."

He said that a third suspect is still at large.

"A preliminary investigation revealed that the items that were in possession of the two men were positively linked to the incident of theft from motor vehicle."

The two men, aged 25 and 30 years old, are due to appear on Thursday at the Uitenhage Magistrate's Court on charges of theft from motor vehicle and possession of suspected stolen property.

Acting Cluster Commander for Uitenhage, Brigadier Ronald Koll, commended the police officers from Despatch.

"When operational duties are directed and coordinated, arrests are effected to clamp down on property related crimes," he said.

"At this time of the year, we also urge residents to be on high alert and report to the police any suspicious individuals or motor vehicles in their neighbourhood."
