Teen and companion busted for armed hijacking after shootout with police

Two men, aged 19 and 20, are expected in court on Wednesday after they were busted for being in possession of a hijacked vehicle, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

According to Port Elizabeth police, the three suspects approached the driver of a white Mazda 323 - used as a jikeleza taxi or township taxi, who was busy loading parcels of a passenger into the vehicle's boot, and held him at gun point.

"They then took his vehicle and drove towards New Brighton,” said police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge.

“About an hour later at about 19:40 the vehicle tracker was activated and the vehicle was found in Ntshinga Street, New Brighton."

Captain Beetge added that; “SAPS K9 Unit members spotted the vehicle and on their approach, three suspects exited the vehicle and started shooting at police.”

He further said that two men were arrested and a firearm was confiscated. The third suspect managed to escape and ran away.

“Three cell phones were also found with them," he added.

“Fortunately, during the crossfire, nobody was injured and no damages to the police vehicle.”

“The two suspects aged 19 and 20 will be facing charges of possession of hijacked vehicle, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed fire arm in the New Brighton Magistrates Court on Wednesday. They will also be linked with the hijacking case of Kwazakele.”
