The Boardwalk’s Sympathy SleepOut raises funds, food and clothing for charity

The Boardwalk’s executives and employees spent the night under the stars on 28 July 2016 to raise awareness and collect necessities for the Healing Minds Community Centre and Khayalethu Boys as part of the Sun International Sympathy SleepOut™. With no shelter and temperatures plummeting, they experienced firsthand the brutal cold and hardships people living on the streets endure every day.

The volunteers were in high spirits as they prepared soup which was distributed to needy communities by The Boardwalk staff members on Friday, 29 July 2016.

The Boardwalk’s Sympathy SleepOut™was aligned with the Sun International CEO SleepOut™ hosted in Johannesburg on the same night. The CEO SleepOut, founded in Australia in 2006, challenges local business leaders to join the global movement to raise funds, awareness and empathy for homelessness and the challenges faced by vulnerable children. The inaugural South African Sun International CEO SleepOut in June 2015 raised more than R26 million. Many of the country’s top business leaders have already registered to participate in this year’s event.

Through its Sympathy SleepOut™,The Boardwalk collected clothes, non-perishables and other items for vulnerable children at Healing Minds Community Centre and Khayalethu Boys.

“Spending the night out in the cold on a winter’s night was an eye-opener for everyone who participated. We want to thank everyone who kindly supported our campaign by making a donation. Our local children’s charities depend heavily on the support they receive from the public and local businesses in order to continue providing their invaluable services to their communities,” says Brett Hoppé, the General Manager at The Boardwalk.
