The Great Moscow Circus Big Top Goes Up!!

Today at Montecasino, in the heart of Fourways, the mighty 40-metre diameter Great Moscow Circus Big Top tent went up, signalling the arrival in South Africa of the greatest circus show on earth.

Under the watchful eye of tent master, Daniel Diorio, and tent boss, David Meatchem, the spectacular Great Moscow Circus Big Top was pitched on 17m high king poles. Two hundred tent pegs were hammered into place, and hundreds of metres of steel cables and ropes were secured.

The Big Top arrived at Montecasino on Monday 5 December alongside shipping containers from all over the world. Inside them all the magic and excitement of The Great Moscow Circus: tons of props; boxes and boxes of gorgeous costumes; swathes of curtains; hundreds of lights, and everything it takes to turn on the music of the circus.

Commenting on the rich history of Russian circuses and Big Top tents, tent boss David Meatchem told guests that traditional large tents, commonly known as Big Tops, were introduced in the mid-19th century as touring circuses superseded static venues. They eventually became the most common venues for circuses, and remain so to the present day.

The Great Moscow Circus Big Top is however a far cry from the canvas tents of old - it is big and mighty, air conditioned, has the latest in LED lighting, and features crystal clear cutting edge sound.

“Audiences can expect a nail-biting traditional European atmosphere where they are never more than 11 metres from the action,” said Meatchem.

The Great Moscow Circus opens to the public at Montecasino on 22 December 2016 with an all-new, sensational, two-hour world premiere program, featuring 19 incredible acts representing the best of the world’s greatest circus stars.

“As Gauteng’s premier entertainment destination we pride ourselves in creating memorable experiences by hosting world class events such as The Great Moscow Circus. We look forward to welcoming them to our complex”, said Debbie Combrink, Marketing Manager Montecasino.

Russia’s most-famous calling card, The Great Moscow Circus guarantees breath-taking, affordable, family entertainment that delivers all the thrills and fun of the circus of yesteryear, with all the skill and daring of today’s circus heroes.

The Montecasino shows form part of a South African tour, which includes shows in Cape Town, Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth.

The tour features some of the best circus stars in the international circus world, including medal winners from Monte Carlo’s famed International Circus Festival, daredevils from Spain and Mexico, and Europe’s top circus attractions, all hand-picked by international producer and CEO of Theatre Tours International, Andrew Guild.
